Sandpoint Looks Strong at Coeur d'Alene Invite09/13/2014
The Sandpoint Cross Country team raced at Hayden Canyon this weekend, and continued to show strength and depth on both the boys' and girls' teams. The girls placed 3rd with a score of 51 in the Large School race (and 3rd overall out of 9 teams) against strong teams from St. Mary's of Portland(41 points) and Coeur d'Alene(47 points). The girls also scored very well over league competitors Moscow and Lakeland, winning the tri-meet score of Sandpoint 20, Moscow 35, Lakeland 83. Leading the way for Sandpoint today was freshman Katherine Kaul, who placed 3rd out of 80 runners with a time of 19:34, which also moves her to number 6 on the All-Time top 25 list. Next for Sandpoint was Mikhaela Woodward, running the majority of the race with a sideache and finishing 6th with a time of 19:51. Rainey Woodward was the 3rd runner in for the team in 12th place with a 20:19, freshman Sharon Rowe moved up to 4th on the team, placing 13th with a 20:33. Claire Pierce was next in 17th with a 21:19. Cori McClelland ran a 22:51 and Emily Marshall a 23:02 in the 6th and 7th spots.
The Boys' team placed 2nd in the large school division (5th overall out of 14 teams) behind Coeur d'Alene by a score of 33 to 47. The boys pack time was a 17:56, while last year the team's average time was a 18:16 with Sam Levora running a 16:18. This is a great improvement and has put them in good position early in the season. The boys outpaced Moscow and Lakeland by a score of 29 to 47 to 58 in straight up competition. Sam Powell led the way for the boys, placing 15th out of 101 runners with a 17:37. Next for the boys was Kenny Kovalchuk in 21st with a 17:54, then Jacob Graham with a 17:57, Andy McGinnis in 18:04 and Matt Cloud in 18:09. Mark Kennaly ran a 18:48 and Reilly Wolfe ran a 19:00 for the 6th and 7th spots.
For the JV teams, the boys took first place overall out of 9 teams and the girls placed 3rd out of 6 teams. The boys race had 100 runners, and Sandpoint had a 1st place finish by Chris Cordova in 18:39, which also earned him a varsity spot in next week's race. Also in the top 10 boys were Clay Rasmussen in 3rd, Finn Lund in 4th, and Daniel Radford in 10th. For the girls, there were 68 runners and Hannah Davidson was 9th, running a 22:52. Excellent job today SHSXC, the miles are paying off!
