Sandpoint Girls Repeat as 4A State Champions, Boys take 3rd

The Sandpoint Girls won their third State 4A title this weekend and second in the last two years this weekend at Eagle Island State Park in Boise. The scored 84 points, beating second place Pocatello's 103. The girls had Mikhaela Woodward and Katherine Kaul just returing from injury, and formed a strong pack up front to win the meet. Leading the race was freshman Sharon Rowe who placed 14th in a 19:51. Mikhaela Woodward was right behind her in 15th with a 19:52. Rainey Woodward was 17th and Katherine Kaul 18th, both running a 19:56. Cori McClelland was 27th in a 20:49, Hannah Davidson 28th in 20:50, and Claire Pierce 49th in a 21:29. The girls had 4 State Medalists (top 20 finishes), which is the most in school history. The girls ran an outstanding team race to propel themselves to another Championship, and bring back 6 of the Varsity members next year.

The Sandpoint boys team took 3rd place to bring home the first State trophy since 1994, and the 3rd in team history. Pocatello was the race with Bishop Kelly coming in second. Sandpoint was led by State Medalist Jacob Graham who placed 16th in a time of 16:58. Sam Powell was close behind, also earning State Medalist honors with a 17:03. Kenny Kovalchuk took 28th with a 17:22, Matt Cloud was 34th with a 17:31, Chris Cordova was 37th with a 17:37, Andy McGinnis was 45 with a 17:45, and Mark Kennaly was 67th with an 18:19. The boys ran according to plan, working closely together for the first half of the race and making a charge to the finish. They set a new standard for future boys teams to emulate

The team will celebrate their season at the awards banquet on Wednesday, November 12th at 6 PM.
