Sandpoint Girls XC battle for 2nd at State Meet, Boys 6th10/31/2015
The Sandpoint Girls placed 2nd at the State Cross Country meet, falling 3 points short of a 3-peat to Century of Pocatello at Farragut State Park this weekend. Knowing it was to close to call at the line, the team waited anxiously for the results, but due to technical difficulties at the line, results were withheld for 4 hours while the meet officials reviewed the finish from film. When it was finally announced, Century had scored 59 in the meet to Sandpoints 62. All 7 Sandpoint runners ran course PRs on the muddy terrain, as the cold rain soaked the course for 48 hours leading up to the meet. The girls were lead by Sophomore Katherine Kaul, who placed 6th overall(out of 88 runners) with a time of 19:30. Also earning State Medalist Honors (top 20 finish) were Hannah Davidson in 12th at 19:50 and Rainey Woodward in 17th at 20:08. Cori McClelland was 22nd in 20:16, Sharon Rowe was 25th in 20:23, Claire Pierce was 28th in 20:30, and Niah Brass was 34th in 21:03. Century had a banner day, placing 4 girls in the top 13 with huge PRs, but their 5th was in 38th, making the score very close. Sandpoint once again ran an outstanding team race, propelling them to their 3rd State trophy and their lowest team score in the last three years. It will be another strong State meet next year as both squads bring back 5 of their varsity 7.
The Sandpoint boys team took 6th place at the meet behind the 17th place State Medalist performance of Fin Lund Andersen, who cruised the course in a time of 17:13. Jacob Graham was taken off of bed rest 6 days before the meet after being down for over 2 weeks with mono, but he still managed to run a 17:28 for 24th place. He was followed by Cole Dillon's course PR 17:59 in 39th, then Clay Rasmussen in 18:11 for 51st, Reilly Wolfe in 18:21 for 57th, Mark Kennaly in 18:24 at 58th and Peik Lund-Andersen in 18:24 for 59th. The boys finish was below their goals but still in the mid pack. They already have their eyes set on the Podium for 2016, and with a crop of excited new runners joining the veterans coming back, it should be another successful year.
The team will celebrate their season at the awards banquet on Wednesday, November 11th at 6 PM and the Sandpoint Charter School.
