Sandpoint Cross Country Sweeps 6th Straight Regional Championships10/18/2018
Sandpoint Cross Country earned their 6th straight Sweep at the District I/II Regional Championships this past Thursday. The racing format allowed all girls to race together and all boys to race together to see how everyone in the Region lined up, then the JV and Varsity scores were tallied after.
The girls were the first race of the day and were in a tight competition with Moscow from the gun, especially with Junior pack runner Bionce Vincent out for the meet with a hip flexor injury. They won the meet with a score of 29, Moscow was 2nd with 32, and Lakeland was 3rd with 61. Sophomore Laurel Hickey of Moscow won the race in a time of 19:24. Niah Brass was 2nd in 20:07, with teammate Chloe Braedt in 3rd at 20:08. Paige Davidson was 5th in 20:15, Corina Wallace was 7th in 20:28, and Mesa Keating pulled in the last scoring spot for the girls in 12th place with a 21:42 PR. The girls JV team placed first with a score of 15 lead by Sophomore Quinn Hooper.
The boys continued to show strength, scoring an impressive 19 points with their win. Sophomore Nikolai Braedt won with race with a 16:43, followed by Ephriam Weisz in 2nd with a 16:52, Jett Lucas in 3rd with a 16:52, Brady Nelsen in 6th with a 17:03 and Kieran Wilder in 7th with a 17:06. The boys ran in a solid pack throughout the race, working to get the Regional title and prepare for a hard race next week in a packed State field. The JV boys won the meet with a score of 22.
Next week the State Championships will be on the same course, and will be the 3rd meet in a row that Sandpoint gets to run on the course.
