Advice
This is a list of ideas of what it takes to build and maintain success for runners, teams and individuals. The coaches will
try to implement these, and the runners will see amazing results if they try to follow them as well. I view this is a
motiviational list for anyone involved with SHSXC, both while they run for us and for their entire lives.
- Cheer on your teammates every chance you get both in practice and in the meets. One of the most inspirational things I've ever
seen is a runner who crosses the finish line, thanks those who are congratulating him or her, and the runs back along the course to
cheer on teammates. This support helps people do their very best.
- Motivation is contagious, just as apathy and laziness is. You as a runner and a team have to make a decision everyday to be
committed to work hard, push yourself, push your teammates, and support your team.
- Respect yourself!
- Always remember that you represent SHS with your actions. Always represent your community, your school and yourself with pride.
- Be a gracious competitor both in winning and in losing.
- Strive for excellence, not perfection.
- Always ask questions. It is important to know why you are doing something, both in your sport and in your life. The coaches
should be able to tell you why we are doing workouts the way we are, or maybe we need to evaluate why we are doing the workout.
- Always try to be positive and enthusiatic.
- Be committed to constantly improving yourself.
- Trust takes time to build but can be torn down in minutes.
- There is not such thing as an overnight success, what you need to realize is the years they worked to make that one night matter.
- If you push yourself beyond where you thought possible, than you are a winner. It's not just the first across the line.
- Don't flaunt your success, but don't apologize for it either
- Become your own hero, only you know how hard you work, and the victory you feel when you don't give up those last 5 yards in an
interval. Smile, pat yourself on the back, then do it again.
- Make a commitment to a healthy lifestyle for the rest of you life
- Nothing takes the place of being prepared. To be your best you have to put in the work.
- Come mentally prepared for the task of running practices and races. Your mental outlook will decide your daily success.
- Never take a shortcut. It represents you giving up or taking an unfare advantage. Take pride in always going the extra step.
